Bernardi and Sandler on Set

Professors Bernardi and Sandler on the Set of "The Shield"

Drs. Daniel Bernardi and Kevin Sandler have teamed up to write a book on "The Shield," a gritty police drama that is has been in production for over six seasons. The scholars argue that the original drama about a corrupt but heroic police unit, the Strike Team, has had a profound impact on television style, the FX brand and the post-network area.

"The Shield's" creator and Show Runner, Shawn Ryan, who also created "The Unit" on CBS with David Mamet, has given Bernardi and Sandler complete access to the set, including the writers, directors, actors and crew. They will be analyzing production documents, such as script drafts, call sheets, editing sheets and network notes; and interviewing all of the principles behind the series. Bernardi and Sandler interviewed Ryan, Adam Fierro, the show's executive producer and writer, and members of the cast and crew. Keeping up with Hollywood synergy, Bernardi and Sandler plan to bring back several internships for ASU Film and Media Studies majors.
