American Media & Popular Culture Admission Requirements

1. Applicants for the MAS degrees in American Media & Popular Culture must have have a BA or BS from an accredited college or university and submit official transcripts (in English) of their undergraduate coursework.* A minimum 3.0 GPA is required for admission. Applicants with an undergraduate GPA of less than 3.0 must appeal their case directly to the Director of Graduate Studies. 2. Applicants must submit a two-page personal statement that describes their past academic work, their reasons for pursuing the MAS and the skills that prepare them for this degree. 3. Applicants to the MAS in American Media and Popular Culture program must complete a three-page essay that assesses their knowledge of media theory and critical analysis skills. The subject of the essay will be included in the online Graduate Admissions Application. 4. Applicants may submit two or three letters of reference, although such recommendations are optional. Referees should be former teachers or work supervisors. Letters from former teachers should address the applicant's academic performance, and all letters should address the motivation and character of the applicant. Recommenders should specifically state the program in which the applicant is applying (i.e. American Media and Pop Culture).* 5. International applicants must submit official documentation showing their score on the TOEFL exam. 6. Before final admission decisions are made, selected applicants will be interviewed by the Film & Media Studies Graduate Selection Committee via Skype. Interviews for Fall 09 applicants will likely occur at the end of July. 7. The GRE is not required.
